Satar

Uyghur · Bowed Instrument

Introduction

The Satar is a traditional bowed string instrument of the Uyghur people. It has a long neck and a large resonator covered with animal skin. The Satar is known for its beautiful, melancholic tone and is an important instrument in the performance of Muqam music.

History & Origin

The Satar has been used in Uyghur music for centuries, particularly in the classical Muqam tradition. It evolved from earlier bowed instruments brought to Xinjiang via the Silk Road. The instrument reached its current form during the Qing Dynasty and has been passed down through generations of Uyghur musicians.

Instrument Features

The Satar has a large, oval-shaped resonator covered with snake skin or fish skin. It has one main playing string and several sympathetic strings that resonate when played. The long neck allows for expressive slides and vibrato. The bow is held underhand, unlike Western bowed instruments. Its tone is soft, lyrical, and deeply expressive.
