Historical Origins
The Tobshuur has been the soul of Mongolian music for over 800 years. Originating from the nomadic traditions of grassland herdsmen, it has been an essential companion to Mongolian folk songs and epic storytelling.
Artistic Features
The two-stringed instrument is typically carved from willow or birch wood with a soundboard made of animal skin. It produces a deep, resonant tone capable of expressing the vastness of the grassland and the emotions of herdsmen.
Current Status
Actively preserved through cultural festivals and music education programs in Xinjiang's Bayingolin and Bortala regions. Regular performances and competitions help keep the tradition vibrant among younger generations.
