Overview

Large-scale classical music suite with 12 movements, each consisting of three parts: Qiong Nai E Man, Dastan, and Meshrep. The pinnacle of Uyghur musical art.

Historical Origins

Originating in the ancient oasis cities along the Silk Road, Twelve Muqam has been passed down for centuries through oral tradition. It was systematized in the 16th century by Queen Amannisa Khan, who organized the scattered musical pieces into twelve structured suites.

Artistic Features

Each Muqam consists of three major sections: Qiong Nai E Man (narrative songs), Dastan (folk stories), and Meshrep (gathering songs). The complete performance spans over 20 hours, featuring more than 170 songs and instrumental pieces.

Current Status

Currently protected at the national level with over 300 recognized inheritors. Digital archiving projects have been launched to preserve the complete repertoire.
